Finding Happiness (and a contest!)

Posted

It was July 2008. My two girlfriends and I were on an afternoon sail in Key West, my favorite place on earth (thus far, anyway…). Our buddy Jarred perched easily on the mast playing guitar while we soaked up the sun and floated over the blue water, passing Christmas Tree Island and Mallory Square.

It was beautiful, and peaceful, and easy.

Sometimes, this is life.

We sailed out of the harbor and into the open waters of the Atlantic. We picked up speed. We bounded over the waves. It was choppy. Jarred easily navigated while we feisty little Southern girls got quiet and turned a little green. I will neither confirm nor deny whether there was actual seasickness involved.

It was uncomfortable, and awkward, and we were ready for the rough spots to all be over.

Sometimes, this is life.

We turned back towards the island, and immediately the Carambola sailed more smoothly, the wind seemed less angry, we were relaxed, and the sun began to drop towards the horizon. The worst had passed, and we were all the more grateful for the blue of the water, the sparkle of the sun’s rays on the waves, and the laughter of our free-spirited friends. (Who totally had their sea legs.)

Sometimes, this is life.

As we sailed back into the calm waters of the harbor, Jarred helped me to the bow of the boat. I sat here, leading the way into the sunset, with my toes dipping into the warm waters every time the sailboat bobbed over a wave. I had finally broken ties from a tumultuous relationship that just would not end; my family was adjusting to the fact that my precious grandparents were becoming more dependent on my parents and me; I worked really hard to find peace in my life, but I still hadn’t relaxed enough to let myself be happy again. Until that moment. In the orange Key West twilight with my toes still in the water, I turned to Jarred and to my college friend Brandy, and I said six words that redefined my life:

“I am so happy right now.”

kw05

Always, this is life.

Sometimes things are peaceful, sometimes they are rough, and sometimes you just feel sick and awkward. But after you turn yourself around and lift your head back up, there is peace. And then, you find happiness.

Rebecca & Marshall: Anniversary Portraits (again!)

Posted

You may remember that my bff Rebecca, her husband Marshall, and I nearly froze to death trying to take their 5th anniversary portraits in the NC mountains back at New Year’s. I am a southern girl, and I just don’t see any reason why the wind chill should be in single digits. Can I get an “amen”?!? I went to visit Rebecca and Marshall in Alabama recently, and we shot “part two” of their anniversary session. Fortunately, it was a beautiful spring afternoon…no frostbite this time!

Happy Anniversary (again) you two!!

Me and my BFF….in case you didn’t read the post from our January session, Rebecca and I were in the same kindergarten class, graduated from high school together, shared a rinky-dink college apartment, and are as close as sisters. 🙂

Someone (that would be me) could use a tan. By the time he shot the photo on the right, Marshall was acting like he was on an NYC fashion shoot…we were obviously amused. I love it.

I love comments! Feel free to “show me some love!”

Rebecca & Marshall: 7 Minute “Anytime” Portraits

Posted

As an only child, my parents have always made a special effort to love my friends and include them as a part of our family. Because of this, I have rarely felt lonely or like I was missing out by not having a brother or sister…my friends ARE part of my family. Of all my close friends, Rebecca is probably the most like a sister to me. She has been there nearly my entire life, and our paths have been a shared experience. We were in the same kindergarten class, we graduated from high school together, we shared the dumpiest college apartment on the planet (you could literally see through holes in the wall into our neighbor’s apt), and I was the Maid of Honor in her wedding. (Our friend Brandy and I knew before Rebecca did that Marshall was “The One.” 😉 ) Rebecca is ridiculously funny, fiercely loyal, pretty darn tall, protective of her friends, supportive, an animal advocate, and loves to run an inside joke into.the.ground. I *heart* this girl!

This fall, Rebecca and Marshall celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, and I helped Rebecca research photographers in Alabama, where they now live, to shoot some anniversary portraits. Marshall surprised us both when he said, “If anybody is going to take those pictures of us, it’s going to be Amy!” Um, hello good husband! We got together in the mountains of North Carolina during New Year’s weekend….when the highs were barely 20 degrees and wind chills were in single digits during the heat of midday. “Brrrrrr” doesn’t begin to describe it! We scrapped our plans for an “anytime session” all throughout the mountains and opted for a whopping 7 minute session (yes, I checked my starting/ending stats after downloading my photos!) at the Mountain Farm Museum near Cherokee NC. After only 7 minutes, my fingertips were grayish and burning…yes I will sacrifice my body for good photos, as I’m guessing that was some sort of pre-frostbite!!

Just like in life & love & friendships, the cold and wind are easier to bear when you hold close to the ones you love…

This is true Rebecca and Marshall…full of laughter!

Daniel, add this one to your campaign kit, hehe…

Just past the Mountain Farm Museum, we saw a bunch of elk on the side of the road! Several years ago, the parks department in Western North Carolina reintroduced elk into the mountain habitat…very cool to see them grazing just a few yards from all of us excited tourists. I like that this girl looks like she’s chatting with her elk buddies….

I’m so excited to be a part of the Greenville Wedding Festivals again this year! This is such a great chance to meet amazing brides (and their grooms) and to hear about their wedding plans. I also love getting to know other wedding vendors and seeing all of the major creativity we have in the Upstate of South Carolina. If you are coming to the show, I hope you’ll stop by my booth and say hello. (Um yeah, I dreamt last night that none of you stopped at my booth. I woke up freaking out, so let’s please don’t make that dream come true!!) If this is your first visit to my site after meeting at the show, THANK YOU for stopping by, and I can’t wait to chat with you again in person!

Jackson & Delaney: “Harsh’s” Kids

Posted

In a post long, long ago I mentioned that most of my life I have always had a close friend also named Amy. During my college years at Western Carolina, Amy Harsh and I became fast friends….little sisters for the same fraternity, driving all night to Mardi Gras where we shared a room with 9 other college friends (um, ewwwwww!), Spring Break at Myrtle Beach, shopping together, and telling crazy stories. “Harsh” and I became known as “Amy Squared,” and one of the frat guys took great pleasure in standing behind us, calling out “Amy!”, and watching as both Amys turned around. We always both turned around. As often happens in life, we lost touch for several years. By the time we reconnected, Harsh had gotten married and was a mom to sweet Jackson and Delaney! We started getting together once a year, and this is a friendship where we can pick up right where we left off just like no time has passed. This fall I was able to photograph her totally freaking adorable and completely sweet kids in the Duke gardens in Durham, NC.

I’m not sure it can POSSIBLY get any more precious than this picture of brother and sister.

Jackson is so sweet and super smart. The best thing about this picture? He was smiling at his Mama off to the side. 🙂

Harsh and her kids…still looks like she could be in college!

We were trying to get Jackson to crack a smile. He took it to a whole new level and started laughing hysterically…I love it!

Delaney is 3 going on 23. Spunky and outgoing, and a complete sweetie.

This is her “silly face.”

The fall leaves were beautiful in the Duke Gardens, so we got to play for a bit! These next pictures are what being a kid is all about…
